Bruce Heltman

I received my BFA in 1984 from the University of Utah. Since then I have been a designer and a production manager for theatrical and corporate events.

My artwork begins with stones that I have hand-painted or kiln-fired with glass. The images of these stones are what I use to create the mandalas. Each piece is then finished as an archival print or is combined with an acrylic painted background making it unique. Often people have expressed that the mandalas are meditative, energizing, and hypnotic. Some even feel the resulting work hints of cultural or ethnic reflections, or sacred geometry.

Once upon a time on a movie set in the desert,
I was working with a group of people as an electrician.
Our job was to go in before the
“Lights! Camera! Action!”
and lay out cable for the elements requiring electricity.

Often there were times when the work was hard and fast
and then there were times when we would wait,
and wait, and wait.
I had a few stones in my pocket that I had picked up
from the shore of an ancient sea on Mars
and some paint pens.
I started to draw on these stones
while we were waiting.

One afternoon we were taking a break for lunch.
There were many interesting geological formations
in the desert and I liked to check them out.
Two of my friends were walking
quite a distance ahead.
When I caught up with them they said,
“Whenever we look for you, you’re always
a Mile Away!”
